Holy Cow!
I am sure most of you have heard about or remember first hand Metropolitan Stadium, home of the original Minnesota Twins. Not only do I remember it, I was 8 years old when the first pitch was thrown by a Minneapolis Miller. Of course I am not so old as to have lost my memory, and the first scratch bowling leagues in which I participated were in the late sixties at Gus Young’s Biltmore Lanes, Tom Sheehan’s Hopkins Lanes, now known as Tuttles and a higher scoring house, Aqua Bowl in Deephaven. A 300 game did not exist at Biltmore or Hopkins, except I seem to remember that Leo Mann shot a perfecto one year at Hopkins. Aqua Bowl was a little more liberal; I remember John Eiss and Paul Johnson scoring 300s there in the seventies. I remember having the front nine there one night, left a 7 pin on the tenth ball for 279 and had to change my T-shirt. Normally the high game jackpots were won with something between 230 and 245.
The reason I brought up Met Stadium was to remind you of a commentator on Twins telecasts named Halsey Hall. I am not sure if he borrowed the expression from Harry Carey or vice versa, but when he saw a great or unusual play he would shout “Holy Cow” to the listeners. This expression came to my mind last night after playing in the Phil Bros Classic League at Texa Tonka. (Phil Bros was a scratch bowler in a couple of the leagues I mentioned earlier).
Matt McNiel began the evening with a 300 game and the front desk announced it was his first 300 of the weekend. They must have known something because after a 268 in game two, Matt fired off his second 300 of the weekend in game three for an 868 set. Matt’s opponent in game three was Eric Dooley and Eric had to settle for half a point with his 300 game. I imagine this may have happened in PBA match play but I am sure I have never seen a 300 tie in League play. By the way, Eric Vermilia added 803 to Matt’s Logo Infusion team which finished with a three game team total of 3742. “Holy Cow” !!
