My Nickel’s Worth                        by Randy Ooney

Labor Day

The first Monday in September has been a holiday known as Labor Day as long as I can remember.  When you were younger than 18, that meant that tomorrow you were going back to school.  After reaching puberty, then Labor Day meant that 80% of the population gets a day off work.  Seems like Take the day off Day would make more sense.

For the Minnesota Gopher fans, Labor Day means that the football season is upon us and we look forward to hopefully record more wins than losses and maybe make it to the Underwater Bowl in Baton Rouge to face Overshoe Tech.  Good luck Gophers!  Another football season begins and our Vikings are hoping to survive the Bridge over troubled Waters.

Now, my wife has really got it rough,

Cause Saturday would be enough.

But Sunday’s a tale she knows too well,

A double header in the NFL.

Halftime brings on pretty girls,

With little short skirts and long blond curls,

But who’s got time for majorettes,

When NBC has got the Jets,

And I just can’t afford two sets.

Then of course, Major League baseball is playing important games to see who qualifies for the playoffs and World Series… Oh never mind.

For all of us bowlers out there, the new league season will begin.  In a few cases some Monday leagues have already started since most bowling centers are on holiday for Labor Day, and many bowlers are at the lake, closing their cabin, or at the fair spending all the money they saved by not bowling all summer.  Have a great bowling season !!
