Step Aside

Maybe I am too sensitive, but I just bristle every time I hear a voice on the radio or TV saying they are going to “step aside” as a way of leading into a commercial.  It is the only way that Corey Provus and Wally Shaver ever lead into the paid advertisements that are bringing us the game or show.  To where are they stepping aside??  They are in a radio booth.  Oh well, I’ll try to get used to it, but I can’t seem to get used to the boring commercials that infect our airways these days.  Whatever happened to the Jingles:

“Grab a bucket and mop, scrub the bottom and top.  Tell us what does it mean? At ______ we’re clean.”

“You can take ____ out of the country but… you can’t take the country out of _____.”

“Hold the pickles hold the lettuce, special orders don’t upset us.”

“When you say ___, you’ve said a lot of things nobody else can say.”

“_______ tastes good like a cigarette should.”

“_____ _____ Speedy _____ _____, for acid indigestion, take it right away.”

“From the land of sky blue waters, from the land of pines, lofty balsams. Comes the beer refreshing, ____ the beer refreshing.”

Now it seems that the best the advertisers can come up with is boring ads for car insurance and prescription drugs with a “Z” in a name that ends with an “A”.  Then there are ads from attorneys that let you know if you took any of those drugs and suffered a fate worse than a pocket 7-10, call them and you may be entitled to a cash settlement.  So, I am going to step aside and wait for the Annual Super Bowl and see if Madison Avenue comes up with their usual fare of advertising entertainment.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, coming to a New Jersey near you, I have inside information that a ticket on the secondary market is going for $3700.00, and if you wish to rent one of the suites in the stadium for your group, a cool million will handle that.  I am settling for my basement room TV, so I can watch the commercials, of course.

Notes on past articles:  Turkey of the year candidate Jeff DuBay was laid off by ESPN 1500.  It was said to be a cost saving measure and there were no hard feelings from Jeff, but Jud Zulgad continues to host guests, mostly from the Strib, and I doubt they are donating their time.  Secondly, A friend and MSC bowler Steve Suhr, who was featured in the article entitled “Yes Sir!” several months ago is recovering from a stroke suffered in January.  The prognosis is good and it appears Steve will make a full recovery.  I join all of you in wishing him the best.

Finally, the jingles ads in order:  Mc Donalds, Salem cigarettes, Burger King, Budweiser, Winston, Alka Seltzer, and finally Hamm’s the beer refreshing.
